The HEIC Problem
You take a photo with your iPhone, email it to a friend, and get the response: "the file won't open." The reason: HEIC format. Since iOS 11, iPhones store photos as HEIC by default, and this format isn't supported by Windows, older Android devices, or most websites.
The solution? Convert to JPG before sharing. Here are 3 practical methods.
Method 1: Change Camera Setting to "Most Compatible"
If you always want to capture as JPG, change the camera setting:
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap Camera.
- Go into Formats.
- Select Most Compatible.
From now on, all new photos will be JPG. Existing HEIC files aren't affected.
Pros: One-time setting, works forever.
Cons: Files become 2× larger, storage fills faster. Be cautious if your iCloud is limited.
Method 2: AirDrop / Mail Auto-JPG
iOS can auto-convert to JPG when sharing to other devices — but this feature is hidden:
- Go to Settings → Photos.
- Under "Transfer to Mac or PC", ensure "Automatic" is selected.
- Hit share → choose Mail or AirDrop to a computer.
iOS auto-converts HEIC to JPG during transfer. WhatsApp, Telegram, and Instagram do the same.
Pros: No extra apps needed, automatic during share.
Cons: Only works during sharing. Doesn't help if you want to convert files for archival.
Method 3: Online Converter (Most Flexible)
